Does the world really need another smart phone platform? Samsung hopes to blind our skepticism with the Wave, the first device based on its open bada OS. Just announced at Mobile World Congress, this handset boasts a dazzling 3.3-inch touchscreen powered by Super AMOLED technology and TouchWiz 3.0, the latest version of Samsungâs custom user interface. An analyst research note Tuesday shed more light on what makes Apple's iPhone 4 tick, noting that the recently released Samsung Wave S8500 smartphone uses the same central processing unit, or CPU, as the iPhone 4.
The Apple A4 chip used in both the iPad and iPhone 4 is manufactured by Samsung, which has a longstanding "foundry" (chip manufacturing) relationship with Apple.
On Tuesday, UBM TechInsights added some color to the dynamics of the Apple-Samsung collaboration by claiming that the Samsung Wave S8500 smartphone uses the same 1GHz core as the iPad and, by extension, the iPhone 4--which also uses the A4 processor. In general, this type of processor is referred to as an application processor and is one part of the overall design called a system-on-a-chip or SOC.
The Samsung Wave offers a Super AMOLED 3.3" display that makes the screen truly come alive, a Social Hub to bring you closer to your contacts and connections, and TouchWiz 3.0 for an intuitive and hugely customizable user interface. The Wave's high-speed CPU ensures swift, smooth application experiences and multi-tasking, making the device an always-on mobile multimedia companion. The Samsung Wave has been built to offer users an unrivalled level of performance, customization and choice in how they connect with their world. The stunning full touch mobile will be available globally from April 2010.
The AMOLED tech behind the 3.3-inch (800 x 480) display promises to provide a brighter and crisper picture with less reflections than current phone displays. So it should serve as a gorgeous canvas for Samsungâs new TouchWiz 3.0 interface. This UI improves on previous versions by adding customizable menus and home screens. So, one could make the music player easily accessible from the home screen. Or, taking a cue, perhaps, from MOTOBLUR, users also have the option of making their social networking toolsâ Twitter, Facebook, IMâ easily accessible from the home screen. âThe Samsung Wave truly demonstrates our commitment to deliver rich, connected and innovative smartphone experiences to everyone,â said JK Shin, President and Head of Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics. âSamsung Wave sees our platform vision become a reality. Spec-wise, the phone has a fast 1-GHz processor, and is designed to run on GSM networks. It also packs 802.11n Wi-Fi radio and Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity (both firsts), a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus, 720p movie recording, DivX support, 2GB of internal memory, a microSD card slot and 3.5mm headphone jack.
Our biggest question about the Wave is how good the Samsung Apps application store is. It promises games,
navigation, social networking, e-book, health and lifestyle applications, but weâre not sure how many developers will want to write for a single manufacturer (thatâs not Apple).
The Samsung Wave provides superior levels of choice to all users via its fully customizable menus and home-page. For those who demand access to their social networking sites at all times, the device allows users to change the layout of the home-page to allow instant access to Twitter, Facebook and a host of other social networking services. For those who love music, the device home-page can be turned into an intuitive media player; while for those who take and share a lot of photos, the home page can be customized to feature favorite images. Users will also benefit from Quick Panel, a way of prioritizing and aggregating applications into one screen for instant access. With its eye-catchingly brilliant screen, Samsungâs latest TouchWiz 3.0 user interface gives a tactile, intuitive user experience, and includes iconic new features such as motion UI, Smart Unlock and customizable widget screen.
Samsung's bada platform allows mobile users to simply and easily download an abundance of applications from Samsung Apps, an integrated application store accessible from the device and online. Featuring a wealth of games, navigation, social networking, e-book, health and lifestyle applications, Samsung Apps gives users instant access to a huge choice of mobile experiences. Samsung established its mobile application ecosystem through the launch of Samsung Mobile Innovator in 2008 and the Samsung Application Seller Site followed by Samsung Application Store as another key element of this offering. Already launched in the UK, France, Italy, Singapore, Germany, Brazil and China, this will be expanded to more than 50 countries all over the world in 2010.
