DVD R discs were developed in 1997 by Pioneer, they are a DVD recordable format which can be recorded on once. They come into their own for recordings you would like to keep permanently and can be played on most DVD players.
A DVD Recordable disc has a capacity to store 4.71 GB of data and in 2005 DVD recordable Dual Layer was developed holding up to 9.4GB.
DVD R has a much larger storage capacity than CD R and since DVD players; recordable DVD players and blank DVDs have reduced in price and are now an excellent value storage media.
To use DVD R discs either need a PC or MAC with a DVD recording drive or need to invest in a custom DVD Recorder. A DVD recorder is an optical disc recorder that records video onto blank writable DVD media.
Most DVD Recorders support a number of formats; DVD RW, DVD R, DVD VR and DVD RW although the DVD Ram standard is arguably becoming obsolete.
DVD R discs are still a very popular recording format, although being challenged by Blu Ray of which produces a better quality higher definition picture, the cost of Blu Ray is still relatively high with DVD R providing an excellent picture for the price.
DVD R discs can give hours and hours of pleasure, can record your favourite films and TV shows and keep those memorable sports events for years to come. Although also being challenged by hard drive recorders such as freeview and Sky Plus, hard drive storage is not overly appropriate for long term storage particularly when dealing with large volumes of stored TV, movies + music.
Probably best to use DVD R for media you would like to keep for years, DVD RW for media you would like to store for months and hard drive recorders for media you would like to store for weeks.
