Upgrading your Apple Mac- cheaper than you think! by Richard Johnson
The Apple Mac has long been the preserve of obscure parts and peripherals. Obtaining upgrades or changing out parts on one of these computer systems meant approaching the parent company or a specialist manufacturer dealing in Macintosh related products. The advent of the G3 really meant a serious change in upgrading or adding to your system. Gone were the days when adding a faster cd or even dvd meant s pretty bad headache and many phone calls or of couse shelling out copious ammounts of cash for something that PC users could pick up for next to nothing.
Of course, many mac users still aren't aware of this, opting instead to upgrade through a specialist company. Adding a dvd writer to a mac to many means opting for a Superdrive. What most users aren't aware of is that Sony or Toshiba mechanisms are used in this instance by the manufacturer. Adding a standard Sony DVD writer to a mac usually gives it full burning funcionality (at a fraction of the price). The same goes for ide (or ATA) hard drives and even Serial ATA drives, which can be swapped out for standard PC components and simply re-formatted and partitioned using OS X's disk utility.
Memory is really no different. Even DDR400 memory is usually compatible with a G5 and the same goes for PC100 and PC133 in G4 computers. Although the author hasn't tested this, it would probably be standard PC memory that is used in intel based hardware.
As a prime example, we run A G3 with 2 Nr 120 gig Maxtor ATA hard drives and 512 megs of PC100 memory pulled from a Toshiba desktop that was beyond use. The G5 I'm currently writing this article on runs 2 Serial ATA 250 gig hard drives (one by Maxtor and one by Seagate). Each drive was re-formatted and partitioned for OS X. The dvd rw drive is the fastest Sony mechanism available and is upgraded every 3 months. Even the memory was purchased from one of our PC component trade suppliers. Every mac since the advent of the G3 takes standard PC components in one form or another. Powerbooks and iBooks are no exception, but don't expect to upgrade your optical drive in this instance.
Next time you're considering upgrading your mac, remember that you don't need to pay the prices you expect. Try a PC shop instead and you may be pleasently supprised by the outcome.
