Technology and Design - The Dichotomy for Customers
Just one of the defining factors of developments in products hasn't been tech breakthroughs but design. Although you could argue that design and technology trends go hand in hand, it is equally simple to see just how design characterizes buyer behavior. However, this is not anything new since mass-production allowed manufacturers to offer cheaper products with the onus on design instead of functionality. E.g., the paper clothing of the 60s were cheap and of a bad level yet for many fashion conscience customers they were must have wardrobe items.
This carries on to the present day. Mobile phone manufacturers continually push and pull on the dichotomy of design vs functionality. Some manufacturers choose simple designs and instead rely on features. Many others choose to utilize fewer features but instead focus on the design, at times even working with fashion designers.
With this attention given to design instead of usability, it is easy to regard products solely as aesthetic but it's also important to remember that such devices are supposed to have functional benefits. When you are making your choice of what product to buy there is always three factors that you have to weigh up - design, features and cost. Sometimes you may wish to spend more on features or design. Sometimes design and functionality are merged. Apple's product design ethos is a great example of design meeting technology.
If you always buy products based on their design then you should really start to consider the functional aspect as well. Whilst it is often be tempting to purchase the coolest design, it may very well not be the smartest. You should always look at the functionality of the device and how you will use it. There is little point of purchasing a really flash laptop if all you will be doing is sending emails with it or browsing online.
So, whenever you are purchasing new products, always think about how or why you need it. One good example is e-book readers (such as the Amazon Kindle). They have practical uses in real life. For instance, a lot of airlines now limit passengers to a single piece of luggage. An e-book reader is much smaller than an average book and you are able to take a lot more books with you when you go on holiday.
Phones are a good example of improved technology functions. You can take your cell phone for all your entertainment needs. Many phones now come with large memories allowing you to save videos, pictures and music. Many mobile phones now have decent digital cameras too, meaning you don't need to splash out on a separate, costly camera. The Internet is no different. Lots of websites have been designed with usability and functionality as the focus. You can now use sites which have been developed to allow you to organize your online time much better. They vary from a social bookmarking service, password manager and personalized homepage.
A bookmarks manager will save time and alter the way you work. Unfortunately, many of them have a basic design and feel. It will be interesting to see how they evolve as more and more of us expect functionality that is shown in a well designed end product.
