The Basic Hardware Requirement for Application Development for iPhone by Michael Torner
You need very minimum and standard hardware for iPhone application development. Though the requirement is minimal, they are all must-have. This may be a small guide that lists the essential hardware required for app development. It also talks about the alternatives wherever possible.
Mac Machine
One of the very first hardware a budding app developer should have is an Intel-based Mac system, as the iPhone applications can be developed only using Apple's OS X. You may wonder, 'does it mean non-Intel based Mac machines can not support application development for iPhones?' Yes, you are right.
You may also be thinking, will a Power PC Mac be useful for the development?
A Power PC Mac can be used but the output may be sluggish, to say the least and it will result in extremely low productivity. If you use an iBook, it will be worse. So it's better to stick to a powerful Intel-based Mac PC for thge best performance you can expect. In spite of that, if you still want to stick to PowerPC, please make sure it is running Leopard 10.5.4 or higher.
Old or new Mac?
Definitely both will work, but a new dual-core Mac system should accelerate your work; and when the competition in the iPhone industry is so tight, how can you afford a slow run!!! However, you can pick up either a Mac Book (or Mac Mini) or a iMAC. For your information XCode and Interface Builder can run smoothly on both of the machines. One very important thing to remember is that whichever Mac you pick up, please make sure that it has at least 2GB RAM for a smooth performance.
iPhone
The iPhone applications may also be developed using an iPhone Simulator that comes along with the iPhone SDK (Software Development Kit). However you may face the problem if you have to test the application's GPS functionality. Accessing the internet along with the application is also difficult in this case. In this case the iPhone simulator is definitely not enough and you won't have any option but to get an iPhone. It's note worthy that if you can somehow manage to proceed without internet and GPS, the iPhone Simulator will work perfectly. Once this minimum hardware requirement is in place you can happily start iPhone app development. You van actually develop any app of your choice and as per the need of the market.
